A simple, fun game of dominos to reinforce past tense verbs for EAL children. Just cut them out in domino shape and allow children to match the correct verb with the past tense. One version has some pictures, the other just has the words.

6 Guided Reading Assessment/Guidance Sheets to use with your younger readers. These sheets can be printed for each child to keep track of their reading abilities/areas needed to improve. How to use this product: Each week, I use a new assessment focus (AF). They are marked as *AF1- decoding of the text. *AF2- retrieving information. *AF3- deducing and inferring information. *AF4- structure and organisation of the text. *AF5- comment on the writer’s use of language. *AF6- to identify the purpose. *AF7- to relate the story to others. Each sheet contains 4-5 ‘I can’ statements in which you can shade in to mark where each child is at in terms of reading. By using one assessment focus per week of guided reading, you can see real progression in the children’s understanding of the particular questions you’re asking. Beside each ‘I can’ statement, I have put a heart shape in which the teacher shades: Green: if the child is secure in that area. Orange: if the child is emerging in that area. Red: if the child is un-secure in that particular area.

This resource is a fun way to encourage children to read the high frequency words in Reception. They will need to be cut out, with the elephant stuck to the back of the word and then laminated. Once they're done once, you'll have them forever. It consists of a selection of the high frequency words at Reception level, with a colourful background to keep them interested. You will need to print two copies of this resource in order to play the game. I played it in groups of 4: *Give each child in the group an even amount of cards. *Instruct them to leave them all in front of them (elephant facing up). *The first child must place their first card down, sound it out/read it. *The next child repeats etc until there is two of the same words placed one after the other. *They all must race to say SNAP if two cards sitting on top of each other are the same word. *The person to say it first, gets all of the cards in the pile and they begin again. This resource can be used as an extension activity for early finishers, or as a revision tool at the end of the year, or even as your weekly game to expose children to these words more frequently. This resource is a fun way to encourage children to practice their phonics or the upcoming phonics screening. They will need to be cut out, with the elephant stuck to the back of the word and then laminated. Once they're done once, you'll have them forever. It consists of a selection of a selection of real and pseudo words, with a colourful background to keep them interested. You will need to print two copies of this resource in order to play the game. A colourful, helpful resource which helps chlildren write the ee sound correctly. I have used lines and dots to indicate a one letter one sound and a digraph. Children will end the activity by attempting to write their own sentence using the ee sound. Lines are provided for children to write on. I put alot of time and effort into my lessons. Can’t get this song out of your head? Well neither can we! Dig deeply into the lyrics for comprehension and close reading practice with these high-interest, current songs to allow children to use their deduction and inference skills. This comprehension is based on the song ‘Mamma Mia’ from the Mamma Mia movie and Abba of course because: We all love the song Mamma Mia. It’s something a little bit different to analyse a song. The children discussed the lyrics in detail, trying to decide what they meant. It allowed them to appreciate the lyrics in songs and not just to sing them. There is a mix of questions involved in these comprehensions, asking children to: *locate information from the text *rate the effectiveness of certain words and EXPLAIN the reason for the answer *form an opinion on the lyrics. Do they like/dislike the lyrics? Why? Overall, children will gain an understanding of the meaning behind the lyrics and they will be encouraged to form opinions on a song, which is something a little bit different. OBSERVATION LESSON: Today was my observation and it was day 1 for us, engaging with Persuasive Writing. The children had to identify the features of a persuasive text using the AFOREST technique. (We used this support mat and it was EXCELLENT! This resource includes: a very detailed, differentiated lesson plan, which allows you to follow it step-by-step (just like I did). Links to the texts I used. Key for annotating. Advertisements for Lower Ability pupils. To start: children will try to persuade their teacher to allow them to go for break 5 minutes early. To you (and the observer, this will show their prior knowledge of persuasion, which should be little at this stage). Main: Using a key, children will highlight and annotate a piece of persuasive writing using a key to spot the different features. There are 3 different persuasive texts for high, middle and low ability children so that they can all access the content. Plenary: Children will be placed into mixed ability groups of 4/6 and asked to SELL you a random object from the class (e.g. a pencil case) in a dragon’s den type fashion. This will show the observer (and you) the progress made since the start of the lesson as the children apply the techniques that they have learned. This resource is made with a Harry Potter theme. Children are introduced to the term pronouns through a short Harry Potter clip where they can hear how badly pronouns are needed in spoken language as well as written. I have made differentiated work resources for the children to use for low ability, middle ability and high abililty- all still based on the Harry Potter Theme. Children are encouraged to work in groups throughout this lesson to try and practice using pronouns on whiteboards, before their activity. Using a Harry Potter theme worked well in my class as it fun, colourful and different from their normal SPAG lessons, which can sometimes be boring. I have included a powerpoint, worsheets and a detailed plan with this package.

This comprehension is based on Qatar as a country and the processes they’ve put in place in order to host the World Cup 2022. It provides children with an interesting background knowledge of the country while testing their comprehension skills simultaneously. I have attached comprehension questions/activities for a lower ability, middle ability and higher ability learner, all in the same document. It worked well for the abilities in my own class, however it can be adapted to suit the needs of your class too. I have saved it as a word document and a PDF.

As last week was Book Week, I planned a week’s worth of lessons based around the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. Each day, we read a chapter of the story and then engage in lessons based on what we’ve read. As you can see from the cover image, this involves lots of chocolate!! The children absolutely adored these lessons and were so engaged in the process of melting chocolate. They needed to see which chocolate would be the best to build the Indian Prince’s palace out of by melting different types of chocolate. HINT: flakes don’t melt! My most recent class assembly was based on Theseus and the Minotaur (with a twist). We had covered this story during our topic of myths https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/myths-understanding-the-features-11943412 and the children LOVED it. I wrote this play script based on the myth however we added a little twist. The minotaur is known to be a FEARSOME, UGLY creature, but in our story he turns out to be nice once people get to know him. Moral: Don’t judge a book by its cover. The play script is editable to ensure that there is enough lines for the children in your class. I have 25 and there is 25 parts. However, it is an easy script to edit and adapt. To tie it all together, we sang ‘Eye of the Tiger’ in the middle of the performance which went down a treat with the parents and the school. Masks NOT included This resource contains the script ONLY and in total the play lasted about 15 minutes. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did and please let me know how you and your class got on.

I wrote a short piece about a Middle Eastern boy joining a British School and decided to make it into a Year 6 SATS sample paper. The questions are structured exactly like the SATS exams and children can use them as revision in the weeks/months coming up to the SATS exams. I have uploaded it as a PDF and also a word document. Also, I’ve separated the reading material and the questions in two different documents if required. Can be used with year 5s also to get them into the SATS style of questioning. Making Connections is a very valuable skill to teach in Guided Reading. Children learn to connect what they read to themselves, another text and the wider world, helping them to understand the text on a deeper level. Most of us tell the children that a good reader “makes connections”, but for the most part, only a handful of the children actually know what this means. This resource will explicitly teach your children how to make connections with what their reading to themselves, another text and the wider world. This resource can be used with ANY text. It teaches the SKILL of making connections and that can be applied to fiction, non-fiction and poetry. What’s included A detailed daily PowerPoint to structure the lessons and encourage children to engage in child talk/cooperative learning. Making Connections support cards- to provide children with the sentence stems in order to be successful when structuring a connection. Summarising Tweet template- to ensure children have understood the text read on a basic level before engaging in making connections. In my class, I got really fed up of using the carousel for teaching guided reading. I felt only 1-2 groups benefited from it, while the others were in engaging in monotonous activities.
